Mohawk Million Slot Owners Revealed to the Public8th March 2021 |
Mohawk Million to recommence
The horse racing sector was one of the worst-hit due to the constantly changing health and safety Covid-19 restrictions, but times are about to get just a little bit easier. The province of Ontario announced in February that races were given the official green light to recommence. In some semblance to normality, horse racing enthusiasts can once again enjoy participating in the sport.
In response to this, Woodbine Entertainment announced that it was opening the doors of its Woodbine Mohawk Park in Ontario, signalling that the racing season might continue. The horse racing leader started by announcing the recommencement of training and later races and continued with its much-anticipated schedule for the year. The highlight of the events was the long-awaited Mohawk Million, hailed as the most thrilling event of the industry.
Second Edition of Mohawk Million captures attention
The second edition of the Mohawk Million race has certainly captured a lot of attention, as Woodbine Entertainment revealed that all nine slots for the event had been purchased. On Thursday, March 4, 2021, the company generated even more interest by announcing the name of the nine slot owners. The second instance of the race taking place at Woodbine Mohawk Park will be for two-year-old trotters.
Each of the available slots cost CA$100,000, and despite the economically difficult times we are in, all slots were purchased before the deadline set on February 15, 2021. The tenth and final slot will be taken by the winner of the William Wellwood Memorial, which is taking place on September 11, 2021.
The official owners for the 2021 multi-million event card are Brad Grant, Steve Heimbecker, Crawford Farms, Determination, Equinox, and Gino Toscani. There are only 6 names because it must be noted that Determination, Equinox and Gino Toscani are each in possession of two slots for now. Things might change as owners are allowed to sell, trade, or lease the slot for the race. Each slot owner was required to pay half of the sum by the February 15 deadline, with the remaining CA$50,000 to be paid by June 1, 2021.
None of the slot owners are required to declare their two-year-old trotter’s name before the date of entry. For this reason, no one knows yet whether any of the slot owners already have a favourite or are taking their time to choose one. The Mohawk Million is going to be held on the same day as the CA$850,000 Metro Pace on September 25, 2021. The Metro Pace is a race for two-year-old pacers.
CEO of Woodbine Entertainment Jim Lawson said, “On behalf of our entire team at Woodbine, I’d like to extend a special thank you to the owners that have purchased slots and are helping support a race that raises the prominence of our world-class sport.” He added that their purchases have helped to improve an unfortunate situation and that he is very much looking forward to the new season.

Also in the beginning of February, Woodbine Entertainment released its stakes nominations for the 2021 Standardbred season. Horse racing fans will be in the chance of winning loads of rewards. The Mohawk Million and the Pepsi North America Cup have surely caused a wave of interest but that’s not all. The CA$540,000 Shes A Great Lady is also taking place on the Mohawk Million card, a race for two-year-old pacing fillies featuring total purses of over CA$2.6 million. Watch this space as with the lifting of the horse race-ban, more events will be happening at Ontario’s racetracks.
