How betting on rugby works

divider

As you may know, there are two different codes of the sport: Rugby League and Rugby Union.

It is in Union where the best betting opportunities lie.

Not only are there domestic leagues and competitions taking place every week, but there are also huge international tournaments where plenty of money is staked: the World Cup, the Six Nations and also the British and Irish Lions’ tours to the southern hemisphere.

Rugby betting odds

divider

As with most sports betting markets, when you wager on rugby, you have a variety of different options available.

You can bet on who you think is going to win these major competitions or, more specifically, you can wager on the team you think is going to win a specific match. Some of the most interesting punts come in the rugby sub-markets. Here we can have a bet on point handicaps, first, last or anytime try-scorer, half time/full time, total points, winning margin and lots more besides.

Fun Fact about Rugby

divider

Contrary to popular belief, rugby was not invented when William Webb-Ellis picked the ball up during a game of football and began running with it! Instead, the sport’s genesis dates back to around 1845 and Rugby School in the town of Rugby, Warwickshire, England – hence how the game got its name.

Rugby Stats

There are lots of statistics about rugby floating around on the web, but one of the most pertinent for bettors relates to the Six Nations tournament which takes place in the UK and Ireland each February and March.

  • Since Italy was added to the tournament in the year 2000, the format has changed: three of the teams play a trio of their matches on home soil, and the other three have two home dates and three away days. The next year, the roles are reversed.
  • In the past 19 years, 13 editions of the Six Nations have been won by the team with ‘home’ advantage – i.e. one of those teams who had three home games and just two on the road.
  • Rugby has only been played at the Olympic four times. The first time was in 1900 and the last time was in 1924.
  • The highest number of points scored during the Rugby World Cup was 162 in 1995. Japan lost to New Zealand, 145 to 17.

How to place a bet online

Betting on rugby is easy, and the only thing you need to be aware of is which code you want to wager on Union or League.

  1. Use the A-Z list on your favourite betting site or app to navigate to the rugby section, and there you will see a list of matches and tournaments coming up soon.
  2. Find the market you want to wager on, hunt down your odds, add them to the bet slip and away you go!

Live streaming

While many of the major competitions are broadcast exclusively by TV networks, the good news is that you can live stream rugby matches using your device and your chosen betting app.  Depending on the operator you have chosen, live-betting or in-play bets may be an added option.
