How betting on the FA Cup works

divider

As you may know, the FA Cup starts each season in September, with the qualifying rounds involving non-league teams from across the UK.

The third round, where the ‘big boys’ are added to the draw, typically takes place each January, and then anticipation builds through each round until the final in the spring.

FA Cup betting odds

As is the case with all football competitions, you have two choices when it comes to your sports bets: the outright market or match betting.

In the outright market, you generally have three options. Betting on the winner speaks for itself, but you can also access odds for naming finalists and semi-finalists. You can bet ‘on the nose’ or each way, which offers a consolation prize if your team loses in the final.

As for match betting, all of the usual markets are available: match winner, both teams to score, over/under 2.5 goals, correct score, handicaps, etc.

Fun fact about the FA Cup

divider

No team has won the FA Cup more times than Arsenal, who have lifted the trophy on 13 occasions – six of those coming since the year 2000.

That’s a fact that leads into two others: Arsene Wenger has won more FA Cups than any other manager (seven), while the most decorated player in the history of the competition is Ashley Cole. His seven wins include three at Arsenal and four at Chelsea.

Statistics for the FA Cup

Bettors looking for an edge in the FA Cup might be best-placed to back the various goals-based betting markets.

Looking at the stats from the 2018/19 edition, every single round averaged more than 2.48 goals per game. The fourth round saw an eye-popping average of 3.33 goals per game across the 16 ties played.  Meanwhile, the vast majority of ties were completed without the need for a replay. Of the 150 games played from the first round onwards, only 27 required a replay to split the teams – roughly 18%.
