Can The Ninjas Do It Again?

Another top Swedish team, Ninjas in Pyjamas or NiP, is currently sitting on a world ranking of twelve. Earlier this year they had a low of twenty but their performance in recent tournaments has seen that rise. They are currently heading into DreamHack Malmö after winning the DreamHack Open Valencia 2017.

Ups and Downs

Founded in 2000, they are an old organization and the main team competed in Counter-Strike 1.6 until they were disbanded in 2007. It was a slow beginning for the team before they started to make an impact on the CS scene. They were also dogged by a number of player changes throughout this time, with almost the entire team leaving at one point to join SK Gaming. 2012 saw a new team in play, and with it came the success of their first victory in CS:GO. The high lasted a number of years before a decline in 2014 along with more team changes. The last years have seen continued lacklustre performances, and the team, still undergoing changes, is far from its best even now in 2017.

Who’s Who?

NiP has a number of highly experienced players on their team. First up is Swedish Patrik “f0rest” Lindberg. An excellent all-round player and well versed in CS. His remarkable flexibility and in-depth knowledge of the game allows him to be successful as rifler or AWPer as the game demands.

Christopher “GeT_RiGhT” Alesund is one of the most recognisable faces in the game. This Swede plays rather eccentrically on occasion though his sneaky plays as a rifler are also skilful and have earned him eSports player of the year in 2009.

Richard “Xizt” Landström is the unoffical In-Game leader for the team. He has a large number of tournaments under his belt and is able to keep the team on the straight and narrow when the going gets rough.

Another AWPer, the young Swedish William“draken”Sundin has constantly improved his play while moving quickly through the ranks, and looks set to continue this progress. Finally there is Fredrik “REZ” Sterner. The latest addition to the team, this young Swede is a rising star in the CS world. Excellent aiming skills along with a desire to win make him a great addition to the team as rifler.

Winning potential

A few years of slump, this year they are slowly on the rise again and will be one to watch. Reigning champions, they are seen as favourites and with three highly experienced players on board, they could well repeat the success of last year.
