Crunch time – Wavering chances for top position8th May 2017 |
This weekend was a crucial one for those teams in the running for top spot. A number of high profile games were on offer, the outcome of many put the fate of the team right in the balance.
Tottenham dealt heart-wrenching blow
Kicking off this weekend was the much-anticipated Tottenham v West Ham game. However things most definitely did not go Tottenham’s way. A fierce battle with their London rivals saw West Ham up the ante and finish strong with the only goal of the game. Tottenham had hoped to head over to East London to put pressure on top of the table, Chelsea. A win would have put them within one point of reaching top of the table however, this unconvincing display has led to the Spurs side desperately hoping Chelsea do not win their next few games – the only hope they have in winning the title.
Drama in the lower rankings
An excellent 5 nil win for Manchester City over Crystal Palace has all but secured a finish in the top four this year in the Premiership. Crystal Palace never looks dangerous and run the risk of relegation if they don’t pick up their game soon. Leicester City overwhelmed a struggling Watford and thus guaranteed themselves a safe place in the Premier League for next year. Swansea also secured safety by jumping past Hull and out of the relegation zone as they beat Everton in a close run one nil victory. With two games left though and one against relegated Sunderland, the fate of this team is only in their own hands. A slip up in these last games could be very costly. Finally, Liverpool faced off against Southampton in what was to turn out to be somewhat of a downer. A goalless draw is not the result Liverpool needed to advance. A rather dire spectacle, this is the fourth time these two teams have faced each other this season and every time Liverpool has failed to score.
What is coming up?
Later this weekend is the exciting clash between Arsenal and Manchester United. The teams are in sixth and fifth respectively and a win here could see a significant increase in placement. A crucial game for Chelsea is heading our way on Monday as they face off against Middlesbrough. A win would almost surely cement them the title, a loss would open up ground for Tottenham to grasp for a comeback.
