Entering the New Year with Chelsea on top, Arsenal moving upwards and United gaining some strength3rd Jan 2017 |
New Year – New excitements
As usual, we’re welcoming the New Year with a bang, and a couple of great matches to discuss. For those of us who prefer to spend New Year’s Eve in front of the television shouting and screaming like the hooligans we are, this holy weekend was no exception when it comes to great happenings in the Premier League world. In fact, the whole Christmas season has been filled with joy – and not the kind of joy you get from unwrapping your favourite toy, but the kind you get from watching your favourite team (whomever that may be – we respect you anyway) take down your least favourite one on the green field.
Chelsea – Stoke
As predicted, Chelsea’s still the leading team, with a total of 49 points – which gives them a six-point gap from Liverpool with 43 points. Their 4-2 win against Stoke City this Saturday erased any doubts (for those who still had them, if any) about how well deserved their lead actually is. The man of the match was of course the great Diego Costa who has scored a total of 14 goals this season and assisted in an extra five. But with all the top teams quickly catching up, Chelsea needs to keep their head over water and not be too confident.Arsenal – Crystal Palace
As for Arsenal, they sure have a reason to celebrate as they won 2-0 over Crystal Palace this Sunday. This win moved them up to third place on the table, and gives them a nine-point gap up to Chelsea. If they keep this up, things can easily turn, and we have an exciting series of matches ahead of us. The match was an explosive one, and it peaked when Giroud impressed everyone with his scorpion kick, giving Arsenal the victory. This win and their new, shiny place on the table is proof that nothing is settled yet, and there is no doubt that the top fights are going to be just as explosive as this match.
Manchester United – Middlesbrough
Manchester United has had quite many unfortunate events this season, but it may look like their luck has turned. This Saturday, they could take three points home with them after their 2-1 win against Middlesbrough. Zlatan impressed everyone, as usual, with a breath-taking goal, which was later annulled, but they managed to put in two goals after all. As for Middlesbrough, it looks more uncertain as they are currently on sixteenth place – which is a dangerous place to be. But on the other hand, Sunderland, Swansea and Hull hasn’t exactly shown a lot of potential lately, so it may look quite safe for Middlesbrough as they are believed to be a stronger team than the bottom three.
