Key Player Profile – France: Antoine Griezmann7th Jul 2016 |
|No of Euro games/goals:||5/4|
Antoine Griezmann is a born Frenchman, but he moved to San Sebastian in Basque, Spain, to play for Real Sociedad in 2005 when he was only 15 years old. After that, his entire career has been in Spain, until now. The largest part of his career so far has been spent at Real Sociedad, where he scored 46 goals in 179 matches from 2009 to 2014. Then he was sold to Atletico Madrid for €30 million, and his career here has been a huge success with 44 goals in 75 matches. At the time he joined them they were title holders, but he’s had to settle with two 3rd places in both his seasons there.
France is a team with a great deal of experience with international tournaments, and the players individually also have a lot of experience on a club level. Griezmann is not an exception in this regard – he’s played many games in Champions League. Some of his greatest performances there has included: Scoring both goals in a game where Atletico Madrid sent Barcelona out of the Champions League; scored the goal to send Bayern Munich out of the semi-final; and played the final against Real Madrid that his Atletico lost. But this is his first European Championship, though he did play for France in the 2014 World Cup.
Home team France has been considered one of the biggest favourites to win the championship since long before it started. Now that they are one of three teams still in the competition, I think they must be considered the biggest favourite. Today’s match against Germany must of course be won, and after that there is a tough final against Portugal waiting for the winning team. Whoever wins today will be favourites for that match.
