Current Club:Real Madrid
Position:Forward
No of Euro games/goals:46/28

Not only is Cristiano Ronaldo the key player for Portugal in today’s semi-final against Wales, he’s also the biggest star of the Euro 2016 by far. But he’s not been anywhere near the best player so far in the tournament. In UEFA national team games, he’s scored more than one goal every second game, and he’s scored just a little less than that in his entire career for Portugal.

Ronaldo’s great breakthrough was at Manchester United, where he scored 84 goals in 196 matches. After six years at Old Trafford he was sold to Real Madrid for €94 million, the most expensive transfer in the history of football at that time. Despite winning many of the biggest titles there is, his biggest accomplishment may be his goal stats. He’s the only player ever to score 50 goals or more for six seasons in a row. Portugal really hopes he’ll find this form again and take them to the final.

Having won many titles for his clubs, he’s not been enjoying that with the Portuguese national team. They’ve never won any titles in their entire history, but they should feel like they have the opportunity to do something about that now. On paper, Wales is a very light opponent in the semi-finals, compared to the teams who were predicted to be here at this stage. But this can easily be turned around, as Portugal reaching the semi-finals is a small surprise to many, as well. This becomes even more true when we know that they still haven’t won a single game after 90 minutes, in this championship. We can be sure that they’ll want to change that today.
