Key Player Profile – Wales: Gareth Bale
Age:26
Caps/Goals:60/22
Current Club:Real Madrid
Position:Winger
No of Euro games/goals:30/15

It is interesting to note that the key player for both teams of today’s semi-final plays for Real Madrid. Having been a key player for Tottenham for some years, scoring 42 goals in 146 games, Gareth Bale was sold to Real Madrid for €100.8 million in 2013. This made him the most expensive transfer in the history of football, a record he still holds. His spell at Real Madrid has been a great success so far, with 47 goals in 81 games.

Gareth Bale has done his part to make up for Wales’ lack of experience in international tournaments. He has become an experienced player in the UEFA Champions League, and Wales certainly enjoys this to the full. His national team career has been very good, and Bale’s been the key player for Wales for some years already. With 22 goals in 60 matches, it’s doubtful that Wales would have been here if it was not for Gareth Bale.

This being Wales first performance in a national team championship since 1958 and their first ever European Championship, Wales will be very eager to beat Portugal and reach the finals today. Most important for them is of course to do this for their own sake, but it will taste even better knowing that they have the chance of beating England’s best performance at the first attempt. Having a semi-final between two teams who has never won the championship is quite rare, and it means that we might see two teams who are more motivated than usual. The sky is the limit for Wales at the moment. They can win today, and they certainly can win the title as well. That would be a great finish to a great competition.
