The star eleven that didn’t make it to World Cup 2018 in Russia
Jan Oblak, Slovenia
Jan Oblak became the most expensive goalkeeper in La Liga when he signed for Atletico Madrid from Benfica. He had 15 clean sheets in the league last season and is ranked by many as the best goalkeeper in La Liga right now. He won the prize as Best Goalkeeper in La Liga 2015/2016 but did not manage to help his Slovenia qualify to World Cup 2018.
Antonio Valencia, Equador
Antonio Valencia has managed to take a starting spot for his Manchester United under José Mourinho and has been in the team since 2009. He managed to win the best goal in Premier League in September 2017 which is pretty amazing from his wing back position. He’s captaining his Ecuador side that did not manage to qualify for the World Cup in Russia.
Vlad Chiriches, Romania
The Napoli defender Vlad Chiriches might be more remembered from when he used to play for Tottenham Hotspurs did not manage to help his Romania to qualify. He’s not the only star from Napoli that’s not going to Russia this summer.
Stefan Savic, Montenegro
Stefan Savic has been an integral part of the defence in Atletico Madrid in front of Jan Oblak. His Montenegro, on the other hand, had a tough qualification and finished third behind Poland and Denmark.
David Alaba, Austria
Ranked by many as the worlds best left back, but when he plays in his national team Austria, he usually starts off from a midfielder position. David Alaba of Bayern Munich had his last season ruined by injuries and his Austria did not impress in the world cup qualifier.
Arjen Robben, Netherlands
Arjen Robben and his Netherlands did not manage to rock Sweden and France in the qualifying group stage and will stay home this summer. Arjen Robben scored double against Sweden in the last qualification game but it was not enough to secure a spot in the playoffs. After the game he officially retired from the orange jersey.
Marek Hamsik, Slovakia
The creative midfielder from Napoli with the famous haircut has been very good for his Napoli side as they are challenging for the title in Serie A. Slovakia, on the other hand, did not manage to disrupt England in the qualification and we won’t be seeing him or his team in Russia this summer.
Gareth Bale, Wales
The speedy winger Gareth Bale from Real Madrid is the big star in the Welsh national team. Unfortunately for both Wales and Bale, he was sidelined due to injury the last two qualifying games and as they failed to qualify for the main event in Russia.
Alexis Sanchez, Chile
Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez has been subject to a lot of rumors, he did not secure a ticket to Russia as his national team Chile missed qualifying by an inch.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Gabon
The big star in Dortmund, who’s famous for his hunger for goals plays national football for Gabon. The African team does not feature a lot of stars and did not succeed in the qualifiers.
Edin Džeko, Bosnia
The golden boot winner in Serie A last season did not manage quite as well in the World Cup Qualifiers. The Bosnian team with exciting players as Pjanic and Džeko did not manage to qualify as they finished third after Belgium and Greece.
Lars Lagerbäck, Norge
Lars Lagerbäck’s Iceland swayed international football during the Euros as they impressed through-out the whole tournament. Lagerbäck did not manage to bring the same momentum when he changed to become the Norwegian coach as they did not qualify for Russia.
There were others that did not manage to secure a ticket
Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Armenia.
Christian Pulisic, USA.
Riyad Mahrez, Algeria
