The Craziest Olympic Events, Part 3/5 – Close enough… or really not29th Jul 2016 |
The flags are a big part of all the visual elements of the Olympics. For example, it is widely considered one of the greatest honours in the world of sports to be allowed to carry the flag of your country at the opening ceremony.
With flags playing such a huge role in the games, one should be able to expect that the people in charge of these things check carefully that everything is ok. Apparently, that did not happen when North Korea were facing Colombia in a group stage game in women’s football in the last Olympics. In front of almost 19.000 spectators in Hampton Park, the name and the pictures of the North Korean players was shown together with the flag of South Korea. It seems like the producer believed that there is only one Korea, which of course there is not. We can see a strong sense of national feelings on the Korean peninsula, because the North Korean players refused to enter the pitch for over an hour. At least they took great pride in representing their country, rather than just themselves.
North Korea won the game 2-0 after two goals by Kim Song-Hui. Neither Colombia nor North Korea reached the knockout stages.
