There was a lot going on with the smaller and lower leagues but the big news this weekend was the UEFA Cup final between Real Madrid and Juventus. Which side would finally triumph?
The UEFA Final
In the run up to the game, the potential winner could have gone either way but once the game was underway it was clear that there was only one. And that one was Real Madrid. In emphatic style, Real beat Juventus in a thrilling game seeing Real the victors with a 4 – 1 win. Ronaldo himself scored two of the four meaning he has now scored in three separate champions League finals. Juventus seemed hopeful at the start, equalizing Ronaldo’s early goal not long after, but after the break, Real put on speed leaving Juventus trailing in their wake. This victory has kept Real Madrid as the Champions League winners, carried over from last year. They have also now won this competition a massive twelve times, three of which have just been in the last four years.
Airtricity Premier Division
There were six games on Friday for this division. It kicked off with an emphatic 3 – nil win by Cork City over Dundalk. Bohemians versus Drogheda United ended in a nil all draw. Things picked up again with Derry City beating Galway United in good style with a 2 – 1 victory. Limerick defeated Bray Wanders 5 – 3 in what appears to have been a long battle. Finn Harps and Sligo Rovers were the second goose egg draw of the day and Shamrock Rovers versus St Patrick’s Athletic finished off the day with a one all draw.
Saturday had four exciting games from the women. Chelsea Ladies soundly beat Birmingham City in a 2 – nil defeat. Following that Arsenal annihilated Bristol City Women in an epic 5 – nil battle. Liverpool Ladies fared slightly better to Manchester City Women losing 1 – 3. Finally, the women’s games were rounded off by Sunderland and Reading with a one all draw.
