The goalscorers tend to take the glory, but their feats would not be possible without the men supplying the ammunition. Using data from WhoScored, we present the leading assist providers from the last five seasons of the Champions League.

🥅 Angel Di Maria

After a disappointing year with Manchester United in 2014/15, Di Maria moved to Paris Saint-Germain and quickly reminded European football fans that he is one of the most effective attackers in the game.

The Argentinian has directly laid on 11 goals for his PSG colleagues in the Champions League since 2015/16, although the French club are still awaiting their first ever title in the competition. Di Maria and his team-mates will hope to break PSG’s duck by triumphing when this year’s edition resumes in August.

🥅 Marcelo (Vieira da Silva Júnior)

Often criticised for a perceived lack of defensive awareness, there can be no denying Marcelo’s attacking quality. The 32-year-old is now past his best but there have been few better at pushing forward from full-back than the Brazilian in the last five seasons.

A major source of creativity for Real Madrid – as evidenced by his haul of 11 assists – Marcelo helped the Spanish outfit to Champions League glory three campaigns on the bounce.

🥅 James MIlner

An unlikely figure in the top 10, Milner has been one of the leading assist providers in the Champions League since 2015/16. The versatile former England international has played out wide, as a full-back and in central midfield during his Liverpool career, and it is from the latter position that he has set up the most goals for his team-mates.

Eight of his 11 assists came during a single season. Milner was phenomenal in 2017/18, which ended on a sour note for Liverpool as Real Madrid ran out 3-1 winners in the final.

🥅 Lionel Messi (11)

Remarkably, Milner has been as creative as Messi in the CL over the last five seasons – at least by this measure. The Barcelona forward has won four Champions Leagues during his career but has not got his hands on the trophy since 2015.

Messi cannot be blamed for that drought; indeed, he has almost single-handedly carried the Blaugrana in this competition of late. More than half of Messi’s assists over the last five campaigns came in 2017/18 and 2018/19.

🥅 Roberto Firmino (11)

Firmino is not a traditional centre-forward. Although he is the man deployed at the tip of Liverpool’s formation, the Brazilian is more of a facilitator than a finisher. He regularly drops deep to pick up possession, before attempting to create opportunities for wide attackers Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

Firmino has excelled in that role in recent seasons, including in the Champions League. His 11 assists in the last five campaigns have all come in the last three years.

🥅 Kevin De Bruyne

De Bruyne has recorded more assists than any other player in the Premier League in the last five years, and he is also right up there in Europe’s preeminent competition.

The Belgium international is a master at fashioning scoring chances for his Manchester City team-mates, be it via raking long passes, incisive through-balls, or whipped, dipping crosses. De Bruyne will be essential to City’s chances of winning the tournament this term.

🥅 Kylian Mbappe

⚽ Champions League Goals: 12

Mbappe burst onto the scene as part of a thrilling young Monaco side that made it all the way to the semi-finals in 2016/17. The Frenchman scored six goals in the Champions League that year but did not register a single assist.

He has become a more rounded forward since then, however, and his PSG team-mates have benefited. Mbappe provided three assists in 2017/18, five in 2018/19 and has four to his name so far in 2019/20.

🥅 Luis Suarez

⚽ Champions League Goals: 13

Suarez has always been more than an out-and-out goalscorer. The star man at Liverpool, he has been forced to play second fiddle to Messi at Barcelona – but he has done exactly that without kicking up a fuss.

Suarez appears to take as much joy from setting up goals as scoring them, and he has been brilliant at the latter since moving to the Camp Nou. In the last five seasons of Champions League action, the Uruguayan has provided 13 assists.

🥅 Christiano Ronaldo

⚽ Champions League Goals: 14

Ronaldo has scored more goals in the Champions League than any other player in history. The Portugal international has found the net 128 times in Europe’s foremost tournament, which he has won no fewer than five teams – one with Manchester United, four with Real Madrid.

The bulk of his assists in the last five seasons also came at Madrid, who triumphed in 2016, 2017 and 2018. Ronaldo laid on 12 goals in those three campaigns alone, before registering two for Juventus in 2018/19 to take his overall tally to 14.

🥅 Neymar

⚽ Champions League Goals: 19

Part of the reason for Neymar’s move to PSG in 2017 was his desire to win the Ballon d’Or. The Brazilian hoped that inspiring the French giants to Champions League glory would put him on the same level as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Things have not gone to plan so far, but Neymar tops the assists chart over the last five years. However, his most productive season came at Barcelona in 2016/17, when he set up eight goals for team-mates – including one in the famous 6-1 victory over his current employers.
