Unexpected Upsets

The first day ended with some expected results but also some surprises as well. Four teams are now eliminated, bringing the number of teams down to twelve still in play.

Opening Day Run Down

Yesterday’s initial round winners were SK Gaming, Astralis, NaVi, North, G2, Immortals, Gambit and Ninjas in Pyjamas. This means that each of these teams has only had to play one game with no need to go head to head in the elimination rounds.

The other eight teams were not so lucky. Cloud9 destroyed an already down B.O.O.T-d, 16 – 2, FaZe took out mousesports with a 16-9 victory and Fnatic took on EnVyUs to remain in the tournament in a close run 16-13 battle. The big surprise here was a revitalized Renegades side defeating Virtus.pro 16 – 7 after a well-fought fight.

Today’s Play

Today sees the top two teams of each group go up against each other for winner of the group. It also serves to give the teams that have already played two matches a well-deserved break. A 10am start saw SK Gaming playing North in an intense bout that took a big turn for the worst for the top ranked team. With half an hour of the last game gone SK Gaming was 12 – 2 down and struggling to pull it back. It was not to be, and after a decent comeback attempt from SK Gaming, North closed out the game with 16 – 11 to take SK 2 – 1 overall. North is the first team through to the playoffs while SK Gaming will have to play again tomorrow.

At 1pm Astralis and NaVi began to duke it out with Astralis taking the first map in excellent style. 4pm will see Gambit and Ninjas in Pyjamas battle it out for top spot, and Immortals will play G2 later in the evening at 7pm.
