US Masters 2018 Preview. Tiger to Roar?3rd Apr 2018 |
The clocks have gone back, all the Easter eggs have been demolished and there’s a tinge of warmth in the air… it must be Spring. If you need further proof of the change of season then just look at the golfing calendar for evidence as it’s time for the US Masters 2018.
The great and the good from the world of golf will shortly descend upon the Augusta National for 4 days of pure golfing joy from 5th to 8th April. The 2018 outing of the tournament sees one of the smallest yet most exciting fields in recent tournament memory.
The 72 par course at Augusta National will once again play using 7,435 yards, with the winner in line to get somewhere around $2 million in prize money. In 2017 there was a total prize fund of $11 million dollars making it one of golf’s biggest tournaments finance wise.
Who’s Favourite for the Green Jacket in 2018?
Claiming his first major title in style, Sergio Garcia won the 2017 Masters, defeating Justin Rose in a tense playoff with a birdie on the first extra hole. So, who will triumph in 2018?
Here’s a quick look at some of the bookie’s favourites to be wearing that famous green jacket after 4 days of golfing action…
Watson has had two wins in his last four tournament starts. He’s back in top form after being worn down by an illness and considering retirement in 2017. After a rapid improvement and great run of form Watson is back to full health and brimming with confidence.
Bubba is back to have a crack at a third Masters title and is regarded as one of the hottest players on the PGA Tour right now. His game style has always suited the Masters, helping him to his 2 previous victories, could it be his year?
Latest Odds: 61/4
Currently No.1 in the PGA rankings, Justin Thomas is certainly one of the hot favourites before the first ball is hit at Augusta. He has a total of four wins since the previous Masters in 2017 and is in great form coming into the tournament.
One of the favourites, Justin’s only weakness might be his lack of experience when it counts. He’s admitted that he just missed out on being the new World No.1 at the Match Play being distracted by the possibility of being No. 1.
Latest Odds: 19/2
Rose is once again in great form again coming into the 2018 Masters. Hitting the greens at Augusta he’s coming off consecutive top 5 finishes at the Valspar Championship and the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
Many pundits believe that there’s a very good chance the 37-year-old from England will put himself in contention by Sunday afternoon, even if he’s not the ultimate winner.
Latest Odds: 27/2
No Masters preview would be complete without mentioning Tiger Woods who is still only five events into his incredible return to golf. He’s already looking quite ready to win a PGA Tour event but will it be too much of a stretch for him to win The Masters?
Always a crowd favourite, he’s just one of the big names that people want to see play at his best. It’s looking like the only thing holding him back may be his driving accuracy, for which he’s currently ranked a lowly 202nd. Despite this, few would underestimate the Tiger!
Current Odds: 19/2
A very impressive win at the Arnold Palmer Invitational puts Rory right back in contention after a rather lost 2017. He’s finished his last 4 outings at The US Masters in the top 10 and only the unwise would rule him out of contention.
If he manages to win his first green jacket, McIlroy would become only the sixth player in history to complete a career Grand Slam.
Current Odds: 17/2
