World Cup Haircuts: 8 of the Worst

World Cup Haircuts: 8 of the Worst

The World Cup has certainly seen its fair share of shocking hairstyles down the years. Whilst we anticipate which players will pop along to the salon for an imaginative makeover shortly before kick-off in Russia, let’s take a look back to World Cups gone by and the classic styles they produced. Here are 8 of the worst…

Romanian Team – 1998

By losing a bet with their coach, Anghel Iordanescu, before the 1998 world cup the entire team turned up to the tournament in France with bleach blonde barnets. It certainly produced a stunning effect with their hair matching the yellow trim of the Romanian kit. At least now we know where Eminem got his hairstyle inspiration from in the late ’90s!

Taribo West – Nigeria 1998

Top points for going all-in, West decided to give himself a pair of little bunches perched on his shiny crown. The green and white braids matched the Nigerian kit for a stunning overall effect. It, unfortunately, wasn’t enough to overcome Denmark in the last 16 but Taribo’s unique style will live long in the memory.

Chris Waddle – England – 1990

Back in the late 80’s Waddle was the king of styles, sporting quite a few variations over the years from slick to fluffy. However, it’s his trademark mullet which has entered the footballers’ haircut hall of fame. Some say he was trying to emulate the Germans, well, it nearly paid off didn’t it lad!

Ronaldo – Brazil – 2002

Let’s just file this one under totally inexplicable shall we? Maybe he’d been to the barbers and asked for a short back, sides and middle? Whatever happened it didn’t stop the wonder kid from getting a brace in the final which saw Brazil crowned World Cup champions once again.

Carlos Valderrama – Colombia – 1990

After sneaking their way out of the group stage, thanks in part to an impressive 1-1 draw with Germany, Colombia succumbed to the might of Cameroon in the last 16. Despite their all too brief 4 game run back in 1990, for many people the lingering memory of that World Cup will be the rich, bouncing Sideshow Bob-esk curls of Carlos Valderrama.

Christian Ziege – Germany – 2002

Taking German efficiency to a whole new level, Christian Ziege appeared at the 2002 World Cup with just a single strip of fur down the center of his crown. It’s a style that even David Beckham would have struggled with in his prime and certainly didn’t do Ziege any favours. It didn’t stop the Germans reaching the final in Japan.

Roberto Baggio – Italy – 1994

Ah, we had to include the famous ‘rats tail’ attached to the beloved Roberto Baggio at the 94 World Cup in the USA. However, it didn’t appear to hold him back, propelling his team all the way to the final, only to lose to Brazil in the harshest way, on penalties.Fabricio Coloccini – Argentina – 2006

Some kind of a horrendous cross between the curls of Ziege and the mullet of Waddle, Fabricio’s glossy perm graced the world stage back in 2006. Pre-match he has flowing locks but once the action got going it looked more like a tangled mess perched on his pate.
