World Cup Recap – Day 822nd Jun 2018 |
A shocker for Argentina, tap in for France and heartbreak for Peru. Yes, it was only day 8 of the 2018 FIFA World Cup but there was plenty of drama as things are starting to get serious in the groups.
The Danes Bring Home the Bacon
Tottenham man Christian Eriksen scored with a sweet strike after just 7 minutes to give the Danes the lead in an end to end Group C encounter.
The Aussies struck back thanks to a VAR review of a handball inside the box coming from an inswinging corner. Captain almighty, Mile Jedinak, buried the resulting penalty to get them back on level terms and that’s the way it stayed.
Several chances late on will leave both sides feeling that they should have snatched the win, with the Danes left reeling from the VAR involvement. An incident which led Denmark manager Age Hareide to claim that video assistant referees are taking the charm out of the World Cup.
The 1-1 draw leaves Denmark needing just 1 point in their final Group C clash with France to be certain of a spot in the last 16. Australia can still qualify but must beat Peru and hope that France can get the better of the Danes next Tuesday.
Au revoir Peru
The second match of the day saw Peruvian dreams of World Cup progression coming to an end as they fell to a 1-0 French defeat. There were decent chances at both ends before a wicked deflection fell into the path of Kylian Mbappe for the easiest of tap-ins.
A sweet strike from Peruvian midfielder Pedro Aquino saw them come within millimetres of drawing level as his shot cannoned off the crossbar in the second half. Despite Peru piling on the pressure and creating a total of 10 shots, France held firm to secure the 3 points which sees them progress into the knockout stages.
A draw against Denmark next Tuesday will now be enough to see Les Blues top Group C but many pundits still feel they are yet to show their true tournament winning potential.
Willy Issues for the Argies
On a shocking night for Argentina, it was Croatia who kept it together in the heat of the moment to take a 3-0 win many would never have predicted pre-match.
After a scrappy first half with missed chances at both ends and some borderline red card tackles, the teams somehow went in level at the break. It was early into the second half that things really started going the way of the pear for Messi and co.
A terrible attempted lob from Argentine goalkeeper Willy Caballero gifted Ante Rebic a goal, with a superb volley back over Caballero and into the net. The error seemed to stun Argentina who quickly attempted to get back on terms through Messi but to no avail.
Arguably the best moment of the match came when Luka Modric sidestepped two defenders to send a sweet strike curling into the bottom right corner of Willy’s net. This was followed up by Rakitic’s injury-time tap-in meaning Croatia finished the match 3-0 to the good and left the South Americans and their fans in tears.
This was Argentina’s heaviest defeat in the first-round group stage of a World Cup since losing 6-1 to Czechoslovakia in 1958. 4 points in the next 2 games for Iceland will see them on the long flight home to South America.
