Yesterday’s Fixtures: 26. June

All in all, everything turned out as expected yesterday, even though I thought for a long time that I was witnessing a huge surprise between France and Ireland. Ireland got a penalty already in the second minute, and they put it in via the post. That was an unexpected start, to put it mildly. But France has Griezmann. He scored two goals in the second half for France, and he also managed to get a red card for Ireland. France is on to the next round, where they will face England or Iceland.

Also Germany-Slovakia turned out exactly as I thought it would. Boateng gave us almost an exact copy of Modric’s goal against Turkey. It became clear from then on that Germany would maintain control of the game. They scored the second goal before half time, and Draxler sealed the deal in the 63rd minute. Germany will face Italy or Spain in the next round.

And finally, the match between Hungary and Belgium fully confirmed our expectations. Belgium had only a one goal lead until quite late in the game, but they scored three more in the late stage of the game. Hungary-Belgium ended 0-4, which marks the end of a team that was one of the biggest surprises of the group stages. Belgium will face Wales in the quarter finals.
